Sid desperately needs a clip, but I think I'd like to hold off until I know his new coat is coming through. Then we can whip everything off and he will have a lovely new summer coat in good time.

The question is, how do I know when is the right time? I want to take off the old fluff, but not shave the tips off the new fur and leave him looking like a hedgehog.

Any thoughts?

If you don’t want to impact his summer coat then don’t clip anymore now and wait for it to come in, new year was always our cut off. You might get away with one last clip now if he hasn’t started chucking anything out yet but it’s always best guess.

I know a few cob owners who clip all year round and their horses still have lovely looking coats.
Gracie was clipped pretty much all through autumn, winter and spring. It made absolutely no difference to her summer coat and she was much more comfortable for it.

I clipped in September then clipped in December. After the second clip Chunky use to develop a very stary/spikey coat in Jan/Feb with his regrowth. So i clipped in March sometimes to tidy it up. He looked better for the clip and never affected his summer coat. I also clipped in May one year as i was going to a fun ride and it had been an incredibly hot few weeks.
To be honest unless you were showing it doesnt matter. Clipping is done for the comfort of the horse.

Robin was clipped later in February last year, I had been holding off hoping he would moukt quickly. It made no difference to his summer coat which is always fine.

So I could wait until the middle of next month or even later, and I wouldn't be chopping the ends of his new fur? Honestly I'm not sure when it actually grows or whether the new hairs push the old ones out!
