I'm 15 years old, I've been properly riding for 10 years but spent my whole life around ponies.

I took a 2 year gap due to eye sight problems and the past 6 months have had to really start all over again:(((

I currently have lessons (very expensive!) and need a cheaper option. Someone's asked me if I can exercise their 14hh Welsh, very forward and fistey big build pony, however I think I'm going to be too big

I'm 5'6/7 and 11st, however a lot more muscle than fat! Do I give it a go? Or is there no chance? Any advice or help?? I just don't want to be embarrassed going to try him and it looking all weird...

long as you dont ride heavy like a sack of potatoes! I wouldnt see an issue.

I'm 12.5st and rode a 14.2 Welsh this summer, G certainly didn't struggle :) if they are old/arthritic/skinny that could mean they are less able to manage to carry weight but most stocky welshies are able to cope, give it a go and see how you feel.

A welsh D isn't going to have a problem with your weight, and they're usually wide & deep through the girth so take up lots of leg. Mine is 14.2 & not the stocky leg at each corner type, I'm 5'5" & weigh more than you but he has no trouble carrying me & is often quite enthusiastic about it lol.

My slight reservation would be that if you're out of practice then a feisty D may not be the best way to get back into things, but having said that many look a lot hotter than they really are. Go & try him, if you get on with one they're a lot of fun :).

I ride a 13.2 welsh C and he rides bigger than the 14.2 connie here, they tend to take up alot of leg. I go between 10-10.5st and he has no problem at all carrying me, just as carthorse says,he is rather enthusiastic about it at times and certainly does a mean 180° with me no problems

I'd also agree with carthorse about the welshies been fiesty so I'd make sure you feel comfortable on him and feel safe and confident. They are alot of fun :)

I think the main thing is that the owner is happy for you to ride her pony. I know that there is no way I would let anyone that I considered to heavy ride my lass. As long as the owner is experienced and mature enough to decide you are light enough and balanced enough and a good enough rider to trust with her pony, then give it a go.

This really helped Thankyou so much! Not so worried now!!:)

Perfect! Thankyou:) I'm improving a lot and am a very enthusiastic and confident rider, not at all afraid about falling off so why not go for it I guess! Thankyou so much for the help:)

Thankyou! Yes I deffinately agree:) at my riding school there are a couple more fistey ones but I find I get on with them best! I'm a confident rider and have no fear in falling since I think I fall better than I ride Thankyou for the support very much looking forward to trying him now :)

I am 11st and ride a 14.2 Connie. I'm not as tall as you but he fits me to a T and has never had trouble with my weight. He is deep chested and stocky and could go all day.
