Hiya everyone!

I've just rehomed a 21 year old gelding who still hacking and things but he's a super hairy cob and needs clipping is it too late? Or I'll have to stop ridin him because he sweats from head to toe and it's just not fair!

i pondered the same this morning as my mare got so hot. Its never ‘too late’ unless you are bothered about spoiling a summer coat for showing purposes. Lots of people with heavy coated types clip all year round.

my young highland my go out and do some shows this summer but Im still thinking I might clip her as in this current warm weather she is cooking :) The shows would only be for experience anyway.

If you don't want to risk it marking his summer coat then yes, it's too late. If you aren't worried about that then it's never too late, just make sure you rug if he needs it.

I think cob types get the double coat anyway. Our summer coat is a thick as the tb winter coats!
But I just ride earlier if she is really sweaty which she isn't currently. She is moulting very well though.

Some clip all year round. I clipped in May one year, so i could go on a fun ride. Thank goodness i did he would have been so hot and would have been exhausted from overheating. I am going to clip one of mine as i cant stand the weeks of moult. He'll still moult even if i clip him but it is much easier to deal with.

thats what im thinking i know people saying its moulting season but if i stop riding him hes going to get stiff in the field and i wont be able to ride in summer cause hell be too stiff from time off and it will be so difficult to bring him back into work so id rather clip him now so i can keep him ticking over through this last bit
